If you’re searching for a plumber in Ottawa, you’ve probably already noticed that there are numerous online listings offering plumbers’ names and numbers, and you might even see some sites that have customer reviews. While you probably can’t go wrong choosing from among the many Ottawa plumbers who are well-reviewed online, it’s still a good idea to do a little bit of research and preparation before you start making your phone calls.

Of course, if you have a plumbing emergency that needs immediate attention, your situation is a whole different story. Still, if you can, take 10 or 15 minutes to call a few emergency plumbers and compare prices.

If your plumbing situation is not dire, follow these steps for hiring Ottawa plumbers.

1. Make a list: Compile a list of at least 10 plumbers. You can use online review sites, or you can add professionals who are based on your side of town. Also, if you know anybody who might be able to refer you to a good plumber, give them a call. If you ask around, you’ll probably find that many of your friends and coworkers have reliable Ottawa plumbers whom they use regularly for all sorts of projects.

2. Know your plumbing issue: Before you call a plumber, it’s important to understand the nature of your plumbing problem—at least to the extent that you can know. For example, if you have a clog or a leak, it’s helpful if you’re able to describe whether it’s in an incoming or outgoing pipe (if you can’t, don’t worry about it, but having any details you know beforehand will be helpful).

If you do a little investigating into the source of your plumbing issue, you may find that you can even fix it yourself. If it’s a clog, you can try a plunger or a chemical drain cleaner. Sometimes, if you just poke around a little bit, the solution to your plumbing issue will present itself.

3. Call around: Using the list of Ottawa plumbers you made in step 1, start calling around and asking questions. Get rates, and find out whether or not they charge for travel time. Also, make sure they’re licensed, ask about warranties, and inquire about whether or not they offer emergency plumbing service. This latter question is important if you’re hoping to create a long-term working relationship with your plumber. Everyone has emergencies from time to time, and it’s nice to be able to call a plumber you trust.

4. Prepare for the visit: To make things easier for your plumber, clear all the clutter from the room where he or she will be working. Also, you can clear out any back-up water from a clog, and you may even want to go out and get any replacement parts that you know are going to be needed.

5. Get a quote: Price quotes are difficult to give over the phone, so most Ottawa plumbers will be unable to give you an accurate estimate until they can assess the problem first-hand.  Then, in order to ensure that you’re getting a rate that works for you, ask your plumber for a quote before he or she starts working.
